How is it Action?
The action genre has continued to captivate audiences while taking them on a fast-paced journey. These films include continuous motion and action like fight scenes and stunts to create a thrilling tone, leaving the audience on the edge of their seat.
Content:
Emotion is a key factor that any action film should have. This feeling should be developed through having a high energy plot, where the audience gets to feel the emotions of the protagonist as they progress through their many obstacles. A majority of action films have a protagonist with very likable qualities which makes the outcome of their final fight with the antagonist evoke much more emotion in the viewer.
Ex: The film Spider-Man: No Way Home features a kind teenager named Peter Parker who has been secretly living his life as Spider-Man. This film takes the audience through a variety of emotions like intrigue, excitement, and sorrow.
Production Techniques
Throughout today's action films, special effects play a major role in effectively telling the story. They help to enhance the situation and create illusions that would not be possible to do in a live-action shot. The use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) has been a huge help for the film industry. For instance, if a film needs to add an explosion or any other thing that may harm the actors, special effects can be added to complete the scene.
Ex: The film Inception required around 500 visual effects (VFX) to perfect each action sequence.
Sound can also help to enhance the energy of an action sequence. Including sounds of struggle like a grunt during a fight creates a more effective scene. Additionally, music can add to the tone of a scene. In the action genre, music is often used to represent power.
Marketing:
The majority of the audience of action films ranges from the ages 13 to 35. Despite being enjoyed by both males and females, these films are traditionally aimed for a male audience. Much of the marketing is targeted at males due to the effect of stereotypes, since these films tend to contain violent content and fast paced scenes.
Most action movie posters have common themes to portray danger and thrill. Many of them contain the main character holding a weapon which helps to present the film's genre and appeal to their target audience. Additionally, the background tends to contain elements like fire to show the danger of the film.
